In 2005, the Chemistry Department at UMass-Amherst received a major NSF-CRIF grant that enabled the purchase of a Bruker Elexsys E-500 electron spin resonance system to replace its aging ESP-300E X-band spectrometer (point your mouse indicator into the picture to the right to see the old facility being used by Lahti group member Chris Ling, Ph.D. 1994) .
The facility is located in the Lederle Graduate Research Tower, Room 28, near much of the instrumentation of the High Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility. It has both X-band (9.5 GHz) and Q-band (34 GHz) capability over 0-12000 gauss, with variable temperature attachments allowing X-band measurements from 4.2-475 K, and Q-band from 4.2-300 K. Several types of cavities are available (although ENDOR at present is not available), including one that allows X-band and Q-band in situ photolysis capability.
The facility is primarily used by groups in the Chemistry Department, but training can be provided for on-campus users needing frequent use. Some off-campus user access is available by collaborative arrangement with one of the UMass-Amherst primary use groups (such arrangements typically require some arrangment to pay for consumable items). |
