Chemical Energy

The development of domestic sources of sustainable, carbon-free or carbon-neutral energy is one of our generation’s grand challenges. The field of chemistry is central to solving this problem, because essentially all energy is stored at some point as electrons in chemical bonds. Our department’s broad collaborations and established strengths in nano-materials and biological chemistry position us to lead the development of new technologies for harnessing solar energy, converting fuels to electricity in fuel cells, and processing biomass to biofuels.
