NEWS

March 2008

·        The group has received funding from the National Science Foundation to develop mass spectrometry-based methods to study macromolecular conformations and interactions in biophysics and nanotechnology

January 2008

·        Adriana Zeledon rejoined the group after several months at Biogen IDEC to complete her Master’s thesis work on disulfide scrambling and its influence on protein conformation

·        Two undergraduate students joined the group to participate in research on CRABP-RAR interaction (Charles Beyrouthy) and behavior of protein-polymer conjugates (Jamal Salah)

December 2007

·        The Christmas Party was attended this year not only by the current group members, but also by two of our alums (Dr. Ben Mohimen and Dr. Joshua Hoerner of Schering-Plough Research Institute). Click here to see the photos from the Party (password protected)

·        The group has received funding from a biopharmaceutical company Biogen IDEC (NYSE: BIIB) for developing experimental methodology to probe stability of protein drugs

November 2007

·        Rachael Leverence successfully defended Ph.D. dissertation “Elucidating the Interaction between Human Serum Transferrin Transferrin Receptor using Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry” and moved to the University of Wisconsin Madison

August 2007

·        A paper published in Analytical Chemistry as an accelerated article (R.R. Abzalimov, P.L. Dubin and I.A. Kaltashov. Glycosaminoglycans as naturally occurring combinatorial libraries: developing a mass spectrometry-based strategy for characterization of anti-thrombin interaction with low molecular weight heparin and heparin oligomers. Anal. Chem. 2007, 79, in 6055-6063) was featured on the journal cover

June 2007

·        Four former group members attended the annual “Alumni Breakfast” at the ASMS Conference: Dr. Dmitry R. Gumerov of Bruker Daltonics (PhD’2003), Prof. Hui Xiao of Albert Einstein School of Medicine (PhD’2004), Dr. Wendell P. Griffith of Johns Hopkins Medical School (PhD’2005) and Dr. Mingxuan “Sunshine” Zhang of Schering-Plough Research Institute (PhD’2007).

·        Four posters and one oral presentation were presented by our group members at the 55-th annual ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics (Indianapolis, IN):

MP490 “Modulation of transferrin conformation by metal binding studied by hydrogen exchange and mass spectrometry” (M. Zhang, A.B. Mason and I.A. Kaltashov)

MP498 “Interaction of the Cellular Retinoic Acid Binding Protein with the Retinoic Acid Receptor: A Mass Spectrometric Study” (V. Sjoelung and I.A. Kaltashov)

TP335 “ESI MS study of pepsin inactivation: implications of small-scale protein conformational changes for substrate binding and enzymatic activity” (A.K. Frimpong and I.A. Kaltashov)

April 2007

·        Dr. Cedric Bobst (PhD’2004, Ohio State University) became our newest group member. He will be using HDX MS to probe molecular mechanism of iron transport and delivery to tissue via the transferrin cycle

·        Our former group member Dr. Hui Xiao (PhD’2004) was promoted to a tenure-track faculty position (in the rank of Assistant Professor) at the Department of Pathology, Albert Einstein School of Medicine (Bronx, NY)

March 2007

·        Our former group member Dr. Wendell P. Griffih (PhD’2005) accepted a tenure-track faculty position (in the rank of Assistant Professor) at the Department of Chemistry, University of Toledo (Toledo, OH)

January 2007

·        Dr. Mingxuan “Sunshine” Zhang left our group to become a Research Scientist at Schering-Plough Research Institute’s new facility in Boston
