James Kearns (Tyson group) Awarded a Research Internship

Text Box:

James Kearns, a graduate student in the Tyson group, has been awarded a research internship in the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Research Internship in Science & Engineering (RISE) program. James has been working with Dr. Ashok Kumar Giri at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB), Kolkata, since the end of August and will spend a few months at the Central Glass and Ceramics Research Institute (CGCRI). Both institutions are under the umbrella of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The internship provides a stipend, airfare, accommodation and some incidental expenses. At the IICB he is working on the genetic link between cancer and arsenic exposure, employing PCR and genetic sequencing to investigate what makes some human beings more susceptible than others to arsenic-induced cancers. At the CGCRI, James will measure the performance of large-scale ceramic water filtration systems that provide water for more than 1,000 families in three rural villages in West Bengal. The material scientists are working on the synthesis of effective filter media as well the rapid conversion of arsenic in the +3 oxidation state to the +5 state by aeration. James will perform speciation measurements with atomic absorption techniques.
