This web site presents the intellectual genealogy of the past and present faculty of the chemistry department of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Faculty are grouped by current, emeritus, and past (not current or emeritus). Each box of the genealogy shows the faculty member's full name, institution, and year of the Ph.D. (or M.S. if appropriate and noted). The person directly below the faculty member is the Ph.D. advisor of the faculty member (chemical "parent"). The advisor's institution and year of the Ph.D. degree are also provided. That person's advisor (chemical "grandparent" to the original faculty member) with associated information is listed below, etc. The genealogy is traced, when possible, back to the three persons who are at the base of the chemical genealogy tree, C. L. Berthollet, J. J. Berzelius, and A. F. Fourcroy. Methods used in the construction of these genealogies are described in Adams, D.L. and Tambouret, Y. J. Chem. Educ. 2004, 81(6), 815-817. Comments on this genealogy should be forwarded to Prof. David L. Adams at adams@chem.umass.edu. |
