Advising

Registration is accomplished using the web through SPIRE. The process requires that you receive registration approval from a Chemistry Department advisor and this hold be removed from your SPIRE account. Hours during which advisors will be available are posted on the Chemistry Department Advising webpages, and will be posted inside the Undergraduate Program Office at 341 ISB. Be sure that you bring your projected S’15 class schedule and completed checklist to the advisement meeting. It is extremely important that students register as soon as possible during the assigned period, therefore you should schedule a meeting with your advisor before your assigned registration period. If students do not register at this time, they may find it impossible to register for a required course. Remember that it is the student's responsibility to see that departmental, college, and university requirements are satisfied.

When meeting with your advisor, please bring with you:

1. Your proposed schedule, click here to download a blank scheduling grid.
2. Your course checklist for the BA or BS degree curriculum.

Dear Chemistry Majors,

Course/Curriculum Changes for the 2014-15 Academic Year

1) There is a new Scheduling Grid for courses beginning Fall 2014.

2)  The Chemistry UG website:

http://www.chem.umass.edu/currentUndergrads/curriculum.html

3) A minimum grade of “C-” or higher in pre-requisite courses, or by permission of instructor, is required for enrollment in all chemistry courses.

4) All chemistry majors must take CHEM 341, 342, 475, 476, and 477 here at UMass-Amherst.  They cannot be taken elsewhere, either in a summer session or during the academic year.  This also applies to CHEM 388 or its only allowed substitute: CHEM 499 Y/T.  If you have any questions about this, feel free to talk with the Undergraduate Program Director.

5)  Integrative Experience (IE) courses for Fall, 2013 and afterwards: Chem 342,  Chem 499Y/T, and Chem 513.

6)  Bioch 420 does NOT count as a replacement for Chem 423.

7)  Students entering as of September 1, 2013 will be strongly recommended to take Biology 151.

8)  Chem 423 will have Bio 151 (previously known as Biology 100) as a pre-requisite, or by permission of instructor.

9)  Chem 330 or 391A, Junior Year Writing, will have 2 sections offered in Fall 14 and will not be offered in the spring semester.
