Scholarships Available through the Chemistry Department

American Microchemical Society Award - Sponsored by the American Microchemical Society for undergraduate students doing research in analytical chemistry. $1000 award, $250 travel allowance, and accommodations for two nights to attend the Eastern Analytical Symposium. Awardee presents poster at the EAS meeting.

Analytical Chemistry Award from the Analytical Division of the American Chemical Society - The award includes an 8-month subscription to the Journal of Analytical Chemistry, and an 8-month subscription to the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry. Must have completed junior year and demonstrated a clear interest in analytical chemistry.

American Institute of Chemists (AIC) Award - The award includes a one-year associate membership in the AIC, and an honored guest status at a special awards banquet. Awarded to a graduating chemistry major.

CRC Freshman Chemistry Awards - This award includes a copy of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics with a commemorative scroll attached to the inside front cover. Awarded to students who have recently completed general chemistry.

Connecticut Valley Section of the ACS Award - This award includes a one-year membership to the American Chemical Society, a subscription to the ACS Journal of the student's choice and an embossed certificate. It is presented annually to a graduating senior at the CVS Undergraduate Student Research Symposium.

Richard W. Fessenden Memorial Scholarship - This award involves a cash gift of $100 and inscription of the recipient's name on the Fessenden Plaque. Awarded to a senior who best exemplifies the twin attributes of high scholarship and citizenship within the chemistry department.

Hypercube Scholar Award - This award includes a plaque and the latest professional version of HyperChem software. Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend graduate school and whose career plans might include molecular modeling.

The Merck Index Award - This award includes a copy of the Merck Index with the recipient's name embossed in gold on the front cover. Awarded to a graduating senior chemistry major generally based on scholastic criteria.

Pfizer Undergraduate Research Forum - This award includes the opportunity to display their research at Pfizer corporate headquarters in Groton, CT. Candidates nominated by the chemistry department and selected by Pfizer to work during the summer after the junior year.

Jay A. Pirog Scholarship - Annual award to animal science and chemistry major (one each) who have a financial need and maintain a 3.2 GPA.

George R. Richason, Jr. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research - This award includes a $30 gift certificate at a local retail store. Awarded for the best undergraduate poster at the annual Chemistry Department Posterfest.

Edward Shapiro Scholarship Fund - Scholarships based on need and scholarship to a son or daughter of a New England Nuclear employee, son or daughter of a Massachusetts subsidiary of Dupont, or, if no candidates from these two categories, a chemistry major at any of the UMass campuses. Awarded to students who are matriculated at UMass, chemistry majors, and in the freshman to junior classes. Awards have ranged from $1000 to $2600 in the past.

Sigma Xi Award for Excellence in Research in the Sciences and Engineering - A $100 cash award plus a one-year associate membership in Sigma Xi to a graduating senior. Last year four awards were made at UMass. Nominations solicited by the Commonwealth College in early May.

Robert Maxwell Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund - This award includes $200 and an embossed certificate. Awards to be made to recognize accomplishments of undergraduates in the non-majors organic chemistry courses.


Scholarships Available through the Alumni Association

William Field Alumni Scholarship - $750 toward the senior year bill. Awarded to a junior who has completed 60 graded credits and maintained a 3.5 GPA for two consecutive semesters.

Leader in the Making Scholarship - $2000 toward the senior year bill. Awarded to a junior doing well academically and who has demonstrated the ability to also pursue co-curricular and community activities. Students apply directly to the Alumni Association.
