Principal Research Interests

Chemical history in New England is my main research focus. The primary effort is devoted to research into the UMass Amherst Chemistry Department from its beginnings in 1869. The professors in the department, the changing curriculum, major changes in facilities, and the phases of departmental activity have all been studied and organized. Research continues into important UMass Amherst chemists of the 19th and 20th centuries and their research activities. Research methods include archival primary sources, artifacts, personal interviews, and photo and image collection.

The secondary research focus is the history of UMass Amherst. The research methods here are similar to the primary effort, and there are many natural interconnections. The goal is to produce a book that, while not comprehensive in coverage, will be thoroughly documented, interesting, and useful. Topics include buildings such as the Old Stone Chapel, artifacts such as the Metawampe Statue, people such as Bernie Dallas, and events such as coeducation at UMass Amherst. In addition, a complete listing of named artifacts on campus is included.
