Don Taylor, Organic Chemistry
Laboratory Technician, Wins Chancellor's Citation Award
The chemistry department's good fortune in
having excellent support staff was again recognized as Don Taylor,
the organic chemistry teaching laboratory technician, received one
of this year's Chancellor's
Citation Awards, which recognize outstanding and exemplary
service to the university. Don is one of a number of chemistry department
recipients of this honor (recent recipients include Kathy
Tobiassen,
Graduate Program
Manager, and Marvin Ellin, Director of Operations).
Don's has worked for the department as an
03 (hourly) in the General Chem teaching labs in July '88,
then with general chemistry program since January '89, and since
August '92 in the organic chemistry program. He has always been especially
attentive to the needs of the students, well beyond just getting
solutions, samples, and experiments ready on time and in good shape.
Even during summer programs, he has been known to find ways to make
sure that outreach programs that depended upon Chemistry but were
not specifically offered by the department -- such as Summer Enrichment
Program for 50 high school sophomores, which ran for a number of
years during the 1990's -- were able to operate successfully.
Our department has been able to carry on and prosper, despite numerous
budget cuts and large-scale retirements, because we are lucky to
have such excellent departmental citizens like Don. We are all proud
that he is one of us.
