Chemistry Welcomes 2007 Class of REU Students on Collaborative Research in Renewable Energy
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Massachusetts Center for Renewable Energy Science and Technology (MassCREST) has received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation Chemistry Division to run a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program under the direction of Prof. S Thayumanavan. The program will focus on collaborative research in renewable energy science. While centered within Chemistry, the program also involves faculty from Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Polymer Science.
The student participants for this 10-week program were selected from a pool of nearly 100 applicants from all over the country based of their outstanding academic records, letters of recommendation, interest in the renewable energy science, and their potential for making significant contributions to science and technology in the future.
The 2007 Class of REU students for this program includes three participants from the area colleges - Stephanie Donlon from Mt. Holyoke, Sarah Wardlaw from Smith, and Jimmy Tran from UMass. Other participants include Autumn Brown from Gordon College, Chris Rich from Stonehill College, Patrick Sargent from Worcester State University, Hadiza ("Kim") Anaza from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Jessica Bauer from Knox College in Illinois, Dan Summerfield from Luther College in Iowa, and Alicia ("Nicole") Moorer from North Carolina State University.
“We have been hearing a lot about energy problems in the news.” said Hadiza Anaza, a freshman from Lincoln University. “This program provides me an exciting and unique opportunity to work on this very important problem and make an impact.”
