New State-of-the-Art Teaching Laboratories
and Lecture Space Arrive at UMass Amherst!

Organic Chem 262-ISB

The Integrated Sciences Building (ISB) opened on January 26, 2009 at 8 a.m. with Prof. Paul Lahti's Organic Chemistry 262. Students were very enthusiastic about the beautiful building, the great seating and audiovisual facilities of the main lecture theater, and the chance to be part of an historic occasion for the university. The ISB has a 300 person lecture theater, and 85 person lecture theater, and a three-room computer resource center, as well as three floors of state of the art laboratory space in a separate wing. The largest lecture theater is already heavily booked with science classes, as the number of majors and nonmajors who want chemistry continues to grow. The building also has numerous "drop by and have a seat" spots for students to congregate informally. All of Chemistry's undergraduate educational activities are moving into the ISB, along with a number laboratory courses from the Biochemistry and Biology departments. Instructors in all departments are looking forward to the collaborative and integrative opportunities for teaching and learning that will be possible in the new facilities. Below are exerpts of the opening lecture video that was taken by Prof. Ed Voigtman on the opening day. Enjoy!
