Tetrakis(N-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-4-oxyl)silane

Crystal lattice analysis by Martha Baskett, A. Chandrasekaran, Paul M. Lahti,

This interesting molecule, described by earlier workers (see citations in Yi Liao, Martha Baskett, Paul M. Lahti and Fernando Palacio, Chem. Comm., 252-253 (2002)) was crystallized by Martha Baskett in 2001-2002. Martha found two allotropes, both of which can form upon crystallization from hexane. Apparently, the rate of crystallization and other factors can give either allotrope. The monoclinic allotrope has a lower melting point, and the pure orthorhombic allotrope has a melting point of about 160 deg Celsius. As the mix of allotropes in a sample varies, the melting point varies between about 140 to 162 deg Celsius. Recrystallizing samples eventually leads to the orthorhombic phase. Magnetic measurements by previous workers (A. Nakajima, H. Ohya-Nishiguchi and Y. Deguchi, Bull. Chem. Soc. Japan, 1971, 44, 2120) appear to have involved the orthorhombic phase, based on reported melting point.

The ORTHORHOMBIC ALLOTROPE structure is loaded initially.
